Student Library Assistant Information

All student workers are required to complete the following assignments:

Reading Assignments

(25% of Average)

Each student is required to complete 3 reading assignments each 6 weeks. I expect each student to read something, anything  (within reason). Then, write a one paragraph (five sentence) summary of whatever it is they read. You will be posting this reading assignment on the AHS Book Blog.

This assignment is not meant to be difficult or time-consuming. Any sort of school appropriate material can be read for this assignment. In fact, anything read for a school assignment (a novel for Mrs. Henry's class, an article for Mrs. Dyal's, etc.) can be used. The point is, I want you reading.

Shelving

(60% of Average)

The major role of the Library is Information and Resource Access. In order to effectively provide access to the books and videos we have in at AHS, they must be shelved correctly. Student workers are taught the correct way to shelve books, according to the Dewey Decimal System, and are expected to maintain their assigned sections everyday. I will take 3 announced shelving grades each six weeks, and 1 unannounced. Every grade is taken at the end of the class period a student is assigned to, allowing each student ample time to maintenance his or her shelves.

My grading system for shelving is very simple. Every student starts with a 100 and points are deducted, as necessary, as follows:

-5 for general neatness. Are all the books  standingupright? Are the "fronted" (pulled to the front of the shelf)?

-1 for every book out of place. This includes every book on the checked in cart behind the desk that should have been shelved by the end of the class period.

Participation

(15% of Average)

Each student earns 2 participation grades per six weeks (one for the first three weeks, one for the second three weeks). Everyone starts at 100. I deduct TWO POINTS for each time I must remind you to do your library work. Points may be "earned back" for going over and above the expected work.

Semester Project

(25% of the Semester Average)

Each student worker is responsible for working on one semester long project that counts as his or her semester exam grade in the Library. These projects are designed to be worked on during your regular library period and should only take time outside of class if you choose. There are several options for semester projects. Read over the following information.

  • Library Webpage: Work with Miss Turney on developing and updating the AHS Library page. This may include working on the Book Blog as well.
  • Displays: One of the ways we draw students into the Library is by putting together displays for special events or on interesting topics. You will work with Mrs. Herbst to create displays that can be reused.
  • Pathfinders: Wouldn't it be easier to start a research project if you had an idea of the resources available in our library? If you choose to work on pathfinders, that's exactly what you'll be creating--a resource list for different types of projects. These will be available to students in a paper format, and on the Library page. (Miss Turney has examples of pathfinders for you to look at.)
  • College Files: It's time the Library became a great resource for information about colleges and universities around the country. You're job will be to put together a form letter to send out requesting information in order to build our files, then  organize and publicize it when it comes in.

Think about what you would like to do. We'll sit down and discuss things, and then I'll be assigning projects during the 2nd week of the semester.
