Introduction

Your Mom and Dad finally said the magic words:  "You can have a CAR!!!"  You are so excited you can hardly breathe!  Then they give you the punchline.  You have to pay for the car.  This Webquest will help you gather the information you need to decide if you really can afford "The Car of Your Dreams".

The Task
Buying a car is a huge decision.  During this project you will be gathering information to help you with this decision.  You will select  a car you are interested in purchasing, and then gather information on insurance, miles per gallon and bank loans.  Finally, you will present to your parents (actually your teacher and classmates) the total cost for your car per month and per year.

The Process
  • Find a used car that you would be interested in buying.  Use the following internet sources:
CarMax® - The Online Auto Superstore
AutoTrader.com
Autobytel

The Brazosport Facts

  • Print out a hard copy of your car choice.
  • Use TDECU.org to find the interest rate for your used car.
  • Use TDECU.org loan calculator to figure out what the payment will be for your car.
  • Print out a hard copy of the loan calculator.
  • Because most on-line insurance quotes require you to be 18 years old, we will estimate the amount of insurance you will be required to pay.
    •      Small car, $1800 per year
    •      Mid-sized car (truck) $2200 per year
    •      Sports car, $2800 per year
  • Figure out how much gas will cost per month.  (Use the gas usage calculation section of the worksheet.)
  • Complete the expense chart portion of the spreadsheet.
  • Write your presentation for your parents (teacher) explaining how much your car will cost per month and per year.  In addition, you must present your plan for how you will earn the money you need.
