The Running Club runningshoes05

Westside Running Club is used to motivate students 2nd-4th grade to accumulate as many laps as they can throughout the year.   The Running Club wall takes up an entire wall in the gym and is in columns starting at 5 miles and increasing in 5 mile increments to 45 miles.  Students run a quarter (1/4) mile track for a preset amount of time (time allotted for running increases as the year progresses).  Once a student gets 20 laps they've achieved 5 miles and their name is placed on a die cut shoe and placed in the 5 mile column.  The grade levels are divided by color so not only can students see their progress compared to students in their own grade level but compared to other grade levels as well.  Also, once a student gets 20 laps/5 miles they receive a bracelet and a foot charm to place on the bracelet.  Every time a student reaches the next multiple of 20 (or 5 mile mark) their shoe is moved to the next mile column and they receive another foot charm to add to their bracelet.  We have some incredible runners at Westside.....several run up to 15 laps...almost 4 miles in 30 minutes.
